J. HORA & CO. GMBH Export fruits company from Austria

Founded in 1916, our company was located at the Vienna “Naschmarkt” and traded in fruits, vegetables, and other food products from the very beginning. After relocating in 1972 to the Großmarkt Wien – Inzersdorf, the trading company was purchased in 1985 by Alois Ulz, a Styrian fruit farmer, and has since been owned by our family.

Our Products

Apples

The apple is by far the most important fruit variety in Styria. The variety is particularly abundant here, with the harvest season lasting from late July to early November. Thanks to the latest storage methods, the availability period extends almost throughout the entire year. From the sweet Gala to the spicy Kronprinz Rudolf and the popular Golden Delicious, we offer the full range of apple varieties.

Strawberries

As a representative of most of the berries we offer, here is the strawberry, which we source both locally and internationally. Upon request, we can also supply our customers with raspberries, currants, and gooseberries.

Pears

Pears are becoming increasingly popular. The pear harvest lasts from late July to October. The variety of types ranges from Abate Fetel, Williams Christ, and Kaiser Alexander to new varieties like the November pear.

Stone Fruit

Peaches, apricots, and plums belong to the stone fruit family and are offered fresh in the summer by Styrian fruit farmers. Since we are located in the Styrian "Vulkanland," we also have access to regional products from the "Vulkanland farmers," such as "Vulkanland apricots" and "Vulkanland plums."

The Apple / Numbers & Facts

About 5,000 years ago, the apple came to us from the Caucasus and has settled on every continent of the world.

The apple is not only popular as a fruit to bite into, but it also appears as a symbol in many stories and historical events.

Since then, it has only shown its beautiful and good side: According to rural tradition, it is a symbol of virginity and fertility. With an apple under the pillow, young women tried to dream of their future partner.

When Wilhelm Tell, the infamous Swiss crossbowman, shot apples off people’s heads, 1,000 different apple varieties were already known in Europe.

Without the apple falling from the tree, the English physicist Isaac Newton might never have discovered gravity. In all his later lectures, he demonstrated gravity with the help of an apple.

The "Fruit Garden of Austria"

Nowhere in Europe are the climatic conditions for growing various fruit crops as optimal as here in Styria, which is why it is also called the “Fruit Garden of Austria!”

The Styrian fruit cultivation mainly takes place in small and medium-sized farms in a rural, family-oriented environment. The personal dedication of thousands of fruit growers, the careful maintenance of the soil and fruit cultures, secure hail nets, and resource-saving irrigation methods ensure the unique quality of our Styrian fruit every year.

Fruit cultivation shapes the landscape in some parts of Eastern Styria with the uniformity of the plantations, while in other areas, the fruit plantations are more scattered. Overall, with its many forests and meadows, the region fully justifies the title “Green Heart of Austria.”
