Export fresh fruits and vegetables from Greece

PROTOFANOUSI S.A. export fruit company from Greece

Protofanousis is the largest Greek exporter of cherries, distributing around 11,000 tons annually. Its main markets are Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, the UK and Romania, while more recently exports have extended to Scandinavian countries.

The production comes from Pella and is fully certified by GlobalGAP The fruit is first brought to a refrigerated storage facility maintained by the company in Kerasia, Pella, in the center of a region where the cherry is the main crop and cherry orchards extend into the foothills of the Northern [Voras] Mountains to an altitude of 1,100 meters.

The cherries go through a precooling process with a special hydro cooler at the same facility. Packing takes place the next morning at the Protofanousi processing center at Ionia in Thessaloniki. A sophisticated electronic calibrator ensures accurate sorting on the basis of size and color.

Continuous monitoring of the cherry orchards and harvesting at the appropriate stage of ripeness, in conjunction with maintaining the “cold chain”, contributes to consistently high fruit quality. The quality and excellent taste of the fruit are also due to the fact that much of the land where the cherries are grown is quite dry. The main varieties in an order based on harvesting date are as follows: Satin, Samba, Larian, Crystalina, Georgia, Early Star, Grey Star, Black Star, Big Star, Lapins, Bakirtzeika (Greek variety), Ferovia, Germensdorfer, Skenna, Regina, Kordia, Sweet Heart.

Preservation tips for customer:

Cherries may be kept in the refrigerator for 3-5 days in a plastic bag and should be washed before consumption. Avoid washing earlier, and allow the cherries time at room temperature before serving for best flavor.

Virtually the whole annual production of the 1100 tons of grapes processed by our company come from the area of Pieria, while a smaller quantity is produced in Kavala, Central Greece and Corinth.

The main export markets for grapes are the UK, Germany and Poland. Protofanousi has immediate plans to double the amount it sells, with expansion into other, mainly European markets.  Apart from the famous Crimson and Thomson, PROTO has already collaborated with growers which planted new seedless table grapes varieties such as the white Sugar Crisp, Sweet Globe and red Jack’s Salute, Sweet Celebration by IFG and the white Arra 15, red Arra 19 and black Arra 32 by Grapa Varieties Ltd. These new varieties have a later harvest time window, have excellent storeability and of course look and taste amazing! Since 2019, these varieties are available to our customers!

Preservation tips for customer:

Grapes can be preserved in the refrigerator for a period of 10 to 15 days on average. Any grapes showing evidence of spoilage (browning) should be removed immediately because the spoilage may spread. It is recommended that grapes be placed in a plastic bag to minimize dehydration. Finally, it is advisable to wash them right before serving, and never before.

Protofanousi handles over 18,000 tons annually between October and May and ranks at the top of the Greek companies that market kiwis.

Almost all of the production is of the Hayward variety and comes from Pieria, Larisa, Kavala and Arta, among the most suitable areas in Europe for kiwi growing.

All production is certified by GlobalGAP and GRASP. The fruit is stored in state-of-the-art company owned cooling rooms located in Nea Ephesos, Pieria and the packing takes place in the company-owned BRC, IFS, ISO22000 and SMETA certified packing house in Ionia, Thessaloniki. The fruit is transported in privately owned refrigerator trucks from production to packing.

Continuous monitoring of kiwi orchards, oversight of harvesting by agricultural experts, and determination of the right stage of ripeness for the desired values of sugars and dry matter ensure the high quality of the fruit.

Thanks to the advanced technology of Protofanousi’s storage facilities, the fruit is kept under ideal conditions, contributing to a product that can maintain its quality characteristics –flavor and firmness –for an extended period.

Countries the company exports kiwi fruit to include China and other countries in South-East Asia, the Middle East, most European countries, South Africa, the USA and Canada.

Preservation tips for customer:

Kiwis can be kept in the kitchen refrigerator for about 4 weeks. If you want to ripen them, put them in a bag – preferably a paper bag – along with a banana or an apple for a day or two.

Strawberries have long been among the best known exported Greek fruits. Protofanousi is one of the largest Greek exporters of strawberries and handles about 2,000 tons annually between December and May. The main markets are Russia, Romania, and Bulgaria.

Production comes from the areas of Ilia and Pieria, fully certified by GlobalGAP Packing is carried out during harvest because of the sensitive nature of the fruit, which is then precooled in special facilities maintained by the company at each production site. Final quality control takes place at Protofanousi facilities in Ionia, Thessaloniki, from which the fruit is sent to market.

Continuous monitoring of the strawberry fields and harvesting at the proper stage of ripeness ensure the consistently high quality of the fruit.

Preservation tips for customer:

Strawberries are best eaten on the day of purchase. They can be kept in the refrigerator for about 3-4 days, however. They should be thoroughly washed before consumption, without being allowed to become soggy

Almost all of the 2,000 tons of lemons handled annually by the company are imported from Argentina, South Africa, Spain and Turkey. Most of this amount is absorbed by the domestic market, by Bulgaria, and a smaller amount by Serbia.

Preservation tips for customer:

Lemons can be kept in the refrigerator for a period of 20 to 25 days, on average, with almost no loss of quality.

COMPANY

Quality is our way of making business
A great deal has changed in the fruit sector globally since the Protofanousis family started their fruit trade and handling business back in 1928.

From the little lemon shops in Thessaloniki to the running of one of the biggest export concerns in Greece, the company of the same name that the family set up then has gone from strength to strength with a flexibility that allows it to continue to grow at this impressive pace.

Investments
The secret lies in our investments and in the use of ever more cutting-edge technology in harvesting, refrigeration, packaging, handling as well as in customer service. Investments have reached €12,000,000 over the last three years, while another €10,000,000 have been earmarked to be spent in the upcoming years on new production units, standardisation and refrigeration.

Brand name
From the very outset, Protofanousis Fruits aimed at creating a strong brand name, breaking the mould of the fixed idea that Greek fruit is transported anonymously to foreign markets. The PROTO brand is now a byword for premium quality, with no corner-cutting.

And with the brand came the expertise. Today, the company’s reputation for its kiwi fruit and cherries has spread far and wide, including among its customers such giants in handling and supermarket chains as Costco, Jeronimo, Lidl, Tesco and Wellcome, which operate in Europe, South-East Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, the USA and Canada.
Production
More than 30 million kilos of fruit are refrigerated, packaged and transported by PROTO annually. We have our own facilities stretching out over a total area of 25,000m2. They include a modern packing plant in Kalochori, refrigeration facilities in Pella and Pieria, as well as a store in Thessaloniki’s Central Fruit and Vegetable Market.

Since 2007, PROTO has been expanding its activities in another fruit, which is now its third most important export product: table grapes.
360° Quality System

As a contemporary enterprise that is profoundly conscious of the importance of quality, Protofanousis applies a 360-degree quality system covering all production stages from the field to the consumer.

Furthermore, quality assurance becomes more complex, the larger the quantity being handled by a fruit company gets, and as such, requires continuous vigilance.

Methods for quality assurance today require a system of multiple controls at all stages of the packing process.
In the field

At Protofanousis, checks begin in the fields, where even before the fruit itself appears, conditions are recorded for the soil, climate, plant growth and the presence of pests or diseases so that forecasts can be made even before bud break and the appearance of the fruit itself.

Checks continue at all stages of growth, the harvesting process is recorded and evaluated, and final measurements are taken so that the initial evaluation can be arrived at. Data are collected, processed and filed through computer information systems, which allow all this volume of data to be converted into a clear picture of the given situation.

In packing

The packing process presents its own challenges. Getting the desired result depends on technology here also. High-resolution cameras, powerful computers and the necessary operational systems provide the company with the capacity to standardise the goods produced, thus ensuring that the qualitative criteria are maintained.

By exploiting such parameters as size, colour, shape and even the condition of fruit pulp using non-invasive methods, the automatic sorters locate and remove fruit that fail to meet the standards.

In the fruit

Soon it will be possible to use advanced technology to measure all the ingredients of the fruit with absolute safety, providing information which can assess even the fruit’s flavour.

Apart from all the information gathered, recorded and evaluated, whether it has to do with the condition of the land plots, the fruit or the facility’s smooth operation, the modern trend in Quality Assurance Systems is the questioning of the Quality System itself.

Ongoing improvements in procedures

This questioning arises from the need for improvement and development, an attitude encapsulating the philosophy of Protofanousis. Despite the fact that the company implements many Quality Systems in all its operations, such as BRC, IFS, ISO22000, GlobalGap, Grasp, Sedex, Smeta and others, which are renewed annually in their most recent versions, the company is continuously seeking room for improvement and evaluates the systems which it applies, whether they relate to Certifications or internal procedures.

The company management and executives are seeking methods for improvement not just to add new safety mechanisms or further checks, but to readjust and redistribute funds depending on current needs. The linking up of available information with practical experience is a dynamic process which changes in real time and impacts on decision-making, whether that be on a daily level or on the level of strategic planning.
COMMITMENT
Protofanousis assures all involved parties, suppliers, farmers and customers that it is committed to making Quantity, Quality and Duration the basic axes that determine its Strategy, while it strongly believes that ensuring all the above is the only way to achieving its future growth.
